I enjoyed the interview with Mr. Ellsberg immensely. Dorothy Day has been one of my favorite Catholic personalities, right up there with St. Francis of Assisi and Teresa of Avila.

I have read extensively about what Pius XII did and did not do to prevent the anilalation of the Jews. Rev. John T. Pawikowski quotes Dr. Edward Gargan, an historian who, to me, says it best "Speaking as a committed Catholic, he felt the Church had seriously compromised its future moral integrity by not standing up more directly and openly to Hi tler whatever the impact and consequences might have been.

Fr. Fogarity alludes to shades of gray in this entire matter, still, Pius XII is being copnsidered for saintood. To me as a a committed, practicing Catholic, our Church is failing us again. If Pius XIi is cannonized, we will
also seriously damage Catholic- J ewish relations.

i thought Mary Ellen O'Connell made some very good points especially exhorting us Catholics to speak up and promote the prosecution of those in government who 8gnore basic human rights. Torture is indeed mo rallky and legally wrong.

Interesting contrast between the two cathedrals. I was consoled to hear that not all liturgical demands can be met architecturally.

I have just read Mary Foley's article "Exceptional Pastoring" and would very much like to make contact with her. I edit the page in The Tablet called Parish Practice and I wonder if Mary would be willing to write something for that page -- or if this article could be edited to fit the more limited word count on the page.

I am a 20 year vet of the Air Force and a Catholic deacon. Why do not military members deserve a chaplain that perhaps from inside the military system can preach peace? What if John Dear had damaged the plane in a way that was not detected and the plane crashed into a neighborhood killing people and the pilot. Do you John Dear, know what it really is like to be in the military? I agree that all violence should be eliminated. I appreciate what you are doing and I support your ideas but don't prevent chaplains from serving. I think your point about no chaplains in the military is a moot point as you really don't want a military at all. So according to John dear there should not be a military. How about a police force. They use violence to police the cities? This is a utopian ideal. I agree it would be nice and the correct way but all of us have degrees of evil and degrees of good. How do we protect the innocent?

During the interview John Dear, SJ mentioned that in El Salvador the fear of living and working for peace was loss of life and in the USA the fear was lack of interest. In a number of weeks mine is the only comment. Fascinating.

"Walking into the future backwards" - on how some theologies are reactionary. What an apt way to end an interesting and thorough complement to Haight's article. Thanks for the opportunity to listen.

This was an excellent addition to the article summary and I fully enjoyed his insightful comments looking ahead to the future of theology in the catholic church. I appreciated his mention of great writer Sr Elizabeth Johnson's work and the need for Catholic lay people in neuromedical science to contribute to catholic theology and help translate new medical science discoveries into accurate and technically appropriate catholic theological interpretations for the future.
For example, the catholic term "ensoulment" and how traditional catholic theology today fails miserably to communicate that concept of personhood and new life from the "moment of conception" in a realistic and appropriate manner, especially if it is done by one person alone in a laboratory test tube based on what we now know about reproductive biology and medical neuroscience.

While this is an overwhelming survey, I would have liked more emphasis on the role of bishops, the church relying more on their training in canon law than pastoral ministry.

Also what about developments in liturgical theology -- or the absence of it?

My congratulations to Roger Haight for his article. I found the podcast to enhance the article. I was a bit disappointed however in the lack of dialogue in the podcast on the tension between the Vatican's stress (particularly with Pope Ratzinger) on "orthodoxy" and the "dangers of relativism". The Vatican response to many of the Theologians cited in the article has been very negative. Roger Haight has himself come under suspicion and a bit of silencing. Congratulations to America for publshing this article and podcast.
